Five checks before you pay anyone

  1. The subsidy comes from the government, to your bank account

Under PM Surya Ghar, the central subsidy is released by the government straight into your bank account, after your plant is installed and inspected. No installer, agent or caller can hand you the subsidy, or take a fee to "release" it.

  2. Apply only on the official portal

Applications are made on the national portal, pmsuryaghar.gov.in. You can register there yourself with your electricity bill details. Be careful with look-alike websites and links sent by message.

  3. Always ask for a GST invoice

Ask for a proper GST invoice in the company's name, with its GSTIN, and check that the capacity, panel and inverter brands and model numbers match what was installed.

  4. Never share an OTP

Don't share OTPs, your bank login or your Aadhaar OTP with anyone who calls or messages you about the subsidy, even if they say they are from the government or a solar company.

  5. Get the quote in writing, item by item

A quote that looks cheap may leave things out. Ask for the brands, models, structure, cabling, earthing, net metering and service to be written down, so you can compare apples to apples. We'll check any quote for free.

Warning signs

  • Someone asks you to pay a "registration" or "processing" fee to get the subsidy
  • You are promised the subsidy in cash, or as a discount "from the government" on the spot
  • The seller won't give a GST invoice or a written, itemised quote
  • You are pressured to decide or pay today

About solar loans

Home solar loans under the scheme are given by banks, and each loan is subject to the lender's approval. An installer can help you apply, but the loan is between you and the bank.

If you think you've been cheated

Call the national cyber crime helpline 1930 or report it at cybercrime.gov.in, and tell your bank straight away.
